NEWS: Italy’s WEEE Collection Insufficient; Faces Potential EU “RAEE Tax”

Despite ongoing efforts, Italy’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) collection remains insufficient, currently reaching only about 30% compared to the European target of 65% of WEEE placed on the market.

In July 2025, the European Commission proposed a tax of € 2 per kilogram on uncollected WEEE, which could result in significant penalties for Italy if the collection gap is not closed. This tax would be charged annually to each Member State based on the difference between quantities placed on the market and those collected for recycling, creating an urgent imperative for enhanced national WEEE strategies.
