EVENTS: CircleWaste Validation Workshop – Podgorica Montenegro

Last week, partners from the Interreg IPA Adrion CircleWaste project met in Podgorica, Montenegro, for a two-day Validation Workshop. The event was filled with discussions, planning, and collaboration in a friendly and open atmosphere. Between meetings, there was time for informal conversations, shared experiences, and a few good laughs, making the workshop both productive and enjoyable.

Exploring Local Waste Management & Urban Context

One of the key highlights of the workshop was a study visit to Podgorica’s City Landfill, where we gained firsthand insight into the daily operations and challenges of local waste management. Observing how different sectors function within the system sparked discussions on how our project could contribute to more sustainable practices.

On the way to the landfill, we passed through different neighborhoods, including areas where informal waste collection plays a significant role. This led to meaningful conversations about social inclusion and the need for waste management systems to integrate and support marginalized communities. The visit was a powerful reminder that waste management is not just a technical challenge—it’s deeply connected to social structures and economic realities.

Beyond the landfill, Podgorica itself offered a unique glimpse into the region’s history. During informal walks, we explored the city’s distinctive architecture and cultural heritage, with discussions touching on totalitarian-era buildings and their historical significance. Many of our partners came from neighboring countries, which meant we shared similar dialects, traditions, and perspectives—making cultural exchanges feel both familiar and enriching.

Building Stronger Connections & Future Collaboration

The second day of the workshop focused on planning, with a Steering Committee meeting and discussions on reporting procedures to keep the project on track. While these sessions were essential, the real takeaway from the workshop was the strengthening of partnerships.

Workshops like this do more than just structure the technical aspects of a project—they help break down barriers, encourage open communication, and create a space where partners feel comfortable asking for help, sharing ideas, and collaborating more effectively. By the end of the event, it was clear that these two days had not only moved the project forward but had also strengthened the bonds between everyone involved.

As we continue working towards our shared goals, the energy and commitment from this workshop will carry us forward. A big thank you to all the partners who participated—we’re excited about what comes next!
